Serrano Ham – The Classic of Spanish Cured Meats

serrano ham is, alongside Iberian ham, one of the great classics of Spanish cuisine, though with one key difference: it comes from white pig breeds, not Ibérico pigs. Its name comes from the “sierras” (mountain ranges) where it was traditionally cured in the cool, dry mountain air — a process that still shapes its character today.

At Spanjeolé, we select artisan-cured Serrano ham, ideal for anyone wanting an authentic taste of Spain for everyday enjoyment, without compromising on quality.

Curing in the cool mountain air

Serrano ham is traditionally cured for between 9 and 18 months, under controlled cold and humid conditions that mimic mountain climate. This shorter curing process (compared to Iberian ham) results in a milder, saltier flavour, with a firm texture and its characteristic pink colour. It’s the perfect everyday option — on sandwiches, tostas, or as a tapa.

Available formats

Our serrano ham is available as a whole leg; as vacuum-packed sliced portions, practical and ready to enjoy anytime; and you can also request hand-carving for events through our ham carving service.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between Serrano ham and Iberian ham?

The main difference is breed: Serrano comes from white pigs, Iberian from Ibérico pigs. Iberian ham also cures for longer and has a marbled fat that Serrano ham doesn’t have to the same degree.

Is Serrano ham a more affordable option?

Yes, since it doesn’t come from Ibérico pigs and doesn’t require as long a curing time, Serrano ham tends to be more affordable, without sacrificing quality.

How do I best store sliced Serrano ham?

In vacuum packaging, in the fridge, ideally consumed within a few days of opening for the best flavour.
